HAIGA Contest held by :iconthe-haiku-club:.

This tanka is about the periodic magnetic flips that the Earth does on a geologic timescale. You can see this in marine (ocean) sediments. The latest switch in magetic poles is really overdue (again, speaking on a geologic timescale) going by past flips, which were pretty steady in their periodicity. I wonder if any of the compass craziness in the Bermuda Triangle might be due to the beginnings of another magnetic flip. There were species die-offs at the time of these events in the past.

I guess I was thinking about this in the context of a time-traveling fantasy game.

Edit:
This was something I learned in college many years ago and I needed a topic for a haiga contest on deviantART. :-) Here is a link to the Wikipedia version of geomagnetic reversal.

here's a comment from the judges:

i feel the poem and imagery compliment one another very well. and while the poem is of a 'nature' theme it obviously alludes to a larger situation than the average poem of this type. =deinktvis
